The brief

John Sadovy was a photographer of considerable renown, celebrated for images that captured pivotal moments in history, from the 1956 Hungarian Revolution to intimate portraits and photojournalism that earned international acclaim.

His daughter approached us to create a digital archive that honours his career and promotes forthcoming exhibitions, sharing his iconic photographs with new audiences. A fitting tribute to a remarkable body of work.

Approach

We let the photographs lead. The site is built around full-bleed black and white imagery with a deliberately quiet interface, generous space and a classical serif that nods to the era John documented, so nothing competes with the work itself.

That restraint carries all the way down to the phone. Each image holds its framing as the layout adapts around it, so the impact of the photography survives on the smallest screen.
