The brief

The Guernsey Choral & Orchestral Society has brought singers and instrumentalists together since 1948, performing major choral and orchestral works at island venues such as St James. We designed and built the Society a website to match: a warm, confident home for its concert diary, history and people.

Approach

The brief was to make a rich programme easy to explore: an at-a-glance concert diary, the Society's history and people, and a clear route to join or come along to a concert. It runs on WordPress, but not in the way most sites do.

Built in, not bolted on
Helm The Harbour Studios content system for WordPress

Most WordPress sites are held together by a stack of third-party plugins, each one a separate thing to license, update and worry about when it breaks. We build the other way around. The features a site like this needs, the concert diary, the people directory, the galleries, are built directly into a bespoke theme rather than rented from plugins. Fewer moving parts means fewer updates, a smaller security surface and a site that keeps working quietly in the background.

And because Helm is shaped around the way the committee actually works, keeping everything current is genuinely simple. Clear fields, plain language and no WordPress jargon, so the diary, people and pages stay up to date without a developer on call.
